Two New Works and Comments

August 12th, 2013

Two New Works and Comments

I'm happy to announce the completion of two new works. The first, Hide & Seek, is a major work I have been working on for about 4 weeks. It is a 30 x 40 oil on canvas showing two young girls playing hide and seek with the older girl trying to play a quick prank on the younger sister by hiding behind the same tree that she is counting 8, 9, 10....ready or not! This was a departure in technique from my usual smooth finish that I normally use in portraiture as I employed rather heavy impasto on the tree trunk to simulate the texture of bark. It allowed me the opportunity to experiment with Liquin Impasto gel (by Winsor & Newton) and I must say it works exactly as advertised. While I have used and will continue to try different brands and products I can honestly say that I have always been satisfied with Winsor and Newton paints and mediums and without a doubt the finest brushes I have ever used are their Series 7 Kolinsky Sable rounds. (Please note that since I can only show one image with this particular blog I posted the image of the 2nd work. The image of Hide & Seek was posted on the brief blog of Aug 7th. Both images and be viewed on the posted link.)

The second work is actually a quick 6 hour study to try out some other new materials-a set of greyscale soft pastels that basically represent the 10 step Munsell scale. Being a bit new to pastels in general I decided to give these a try and as usual I reached for my favorite Wolff's Carbon pencil for better control of the darks and Generals white charcoal for the fine lights. Throw in a bit a graphite pencil for general sketch and outline of the finer details, stir, blend, smudge and simmer for 6 hours and there you have it. I will probably do an oil portrait of this same image at a later date as the expression and pose are one of my favorites.

Til next time, enjoy the view and thanks for stopping by to visit.

Welcome

July 12th, 2013

Welcome

I would like to welcome everyone to my website. I just wanted to take a moment to thank everyone that has taken time out of their day to view my work and I hope it has brought some measure of enjoyment to all. I posted one of my older works today, a still life titled 'Violin and Rose'. Yeah, bet no one has ever painted that subject before! The main reason for posting it was for me, it was a beginning or a rebirth if you will, of my art. I was 40 years old when I completed that work and still at my regular fulltime job. I recall the curiosity and a bit of trepidation wondering if I could still produce any art worth looking at or if I would get frustrated and trash the whole thing. Music was very big in my life at that time. When I quit art at age 16 my creative energies and fire were channeled into music, mostly as a guitarist. Later I learned to play piano and basically any fretted musical instrument but the violin was one that frustrated my attempts to master it. That probably was the main reason for painting this piece along with a challenge from a co worker that enjoyed and produced her own artwork. I knew very little about painting in oils and what little I could dig up was in old books I still had from years ago. However, once I experienced the freedom of mixing and blending the oils on canvas I was hooked. For me oils are patient. I had time to work the paint and not be in a hurry to get it over with as I had been when I was younger. I know other mediums can produce unbelievable work and I am always in awe of masters of acrylic and watercolor just to name a couple. But for me, oils suit my personality. I was in a rush my whole life until I was able to retire from my day job. Now I just want to sit back, relax and watch paint dry.....!
Hope you have a great, relaxed and peaceful day.
