Like most I began drawing at an early age. Some of my earliest childhood memories are of time spent drawing people, places and things that interested a young boy. It was a great escape during times I was ill and confined to bed or the house as there was no internet and only 4 channels on tv to watch growing up in the '60s . There were no museums nearby, just a library and the only chance I had to see paintings were in books and the family bible which as I recall held magnificent works by Carl Heinrich Bloch. That stoked my interest in painting along with a coffee table book of Norman Rockwell illustrations. My first attempts were in acrylic and mostly portraits copied from books which gained me some notice locally but this was the time when most realist art was nearly taboo, laughed at or frowned upon. When it occurred to me that there were people doing better work than myself living in homeless shelters I decided at age 16 to abandon art and like many wound up in the corporate world to make a living. Fast forward 24 years later at age 40 in 1998 I decided to try to paint just for kicks in oils prompted by a coworker. I hadn't touched a brush or pencil other than to fill out an invoice since age 16 and frankly, instead of being rusty I was shocked to find that I had improved enormously since my teen years. Since I was completely self taught I began trying to learn oil techniques from books etc. But after a year I quit again as my day job pressures mounted. Then in 2010 I met my wife and her encouragement brought out the brushes once more and since I retired in 2012 I can now focus on my art fulltime. My first love in art is portraiture but I am now branching out into different subjects and concentrating on composition. I hope everyone enjoys what they see here as I will continue to try to improve my technique and composition to share with all.
